Featured Art: The Governor Stanford

Artist’s Statement

I created this artwork for the “Railways & Reveries: Imagination in Motion” exhibit at the Sunrise Civic Center Gallery in Sunrise, Florida. I took photographs of the engine at the Train Museum in Sacramento, California. Built in Philadelphia in 1862, it is a 40-ton wood burning steam locomotive and was the pioneer engine of the Central Pacific Railroad.

I created “The Governor Stanford” with cotton fabrics, batiks, Lumiere paints, pastel dye sticks, Sulky threads and Wonder Under fusible. There are 168 separate pieces fused to the background, then stitched and machine-quilted.

Melani’s piece is even more stunning in person. It took first place in the NLAPW-Fort Lauderdale’s recent “Railways & Reveries: Imagination in Motion” juried show. It was definitely the showcase art work along side detailed model train displays in this exhibit. Congratulationa again, Melani!

I am a lover of trains and the romantic, unhurried journeys they afford us. Thank you for celebrating their history with your beautiful art!

This is breathtaking! I have no other description, but that fits. I really don’t know how you did it, but it’s really beautiful
