NLAPW Policy on the Use of AI

The National League of American Pen Women, Inc. recognizes the increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) in work and numerous facets of our society. However, the lack of rules, regulations, and guidelines creating AI makes its use problematic for the arts and artists in every genre.

While writers, visual artists, and musicians may use computer manipulation in their arts (synchronizers in music and digital manipulation in art), using AI to generate new writing, music, or a work of art becomes replacement of the human, not a tool.

Because we value (and wish to promote) the original work of creative women, the NLAPW will not allow AI-generated visual art, written work, or music in any of our competitions, performances, or exhibitions unless otherwise stated. We will not accept AI-generated material for The Pen Woman magazine or our NLAPW website. In addition, we do not accept AI-generated manuscript content for Pen Women Press.

  • For letters: AI may not be used to generate ideas, create content of a written work, or to edit for development and style. However, AI may be used to edit for grammar and punctuation.
  • For art and music: AI may not be used to generate ideas or generate entire works of visual art, or generate ideas or entire musical compositions. AI may be used in experimentation that eventually leads the artist to the creation of an original work.

If the NLAPW chooses to sponsor an AI-generated competition or exhibition at some point, only in that case may AI-generated work be used.
