From Discouragement to Encouragement: Finding the Courage to Create

As your national membership chair, my goal is to strengthen the connection between our members and National through the Three Cs: Communication, Connection, and Compassion. Compassion often leads to cooperation. When we understand one another’s challenges, we are more willing to work together than criticize. This also supports our League motto: One for All and All for One.

During this year’s membership renewal process, working closely with our new administrative assistant, Karen Presley, we developed more consistent reporting procedures. Together, we can improve the accuracy of membership records, ensure timely delivery of The Pen Woman magazine, and provide headquarters with the information it needs to serve our members effectively. Attending or watching the recording of the monthly Zoom presentations will help connect us with each other.

Over the years, our League’s biennial themes have reflected our journey. In 2016, we were reminded that we were Born to Create. In 2018, we embraced We Are What We Create, as members from across the country came together to support the 12 remaining members of the Des Moines Branch, Iowa, to make the 49th Biennial a success.

During the challenges of the pandemic, NLAPW, like the phoenix, rose from discouragement and uncertainty thanks to the dedication and perseverance of its members. Then in 2022, we celebrated the 50th Biennial in Washington D.C., the home of our headquarters. At the 51st Biennial in Columbus, Ohio, in 2024, we were reminded that To Create Takes Courage. At the 52nd Biennial in 2026, once again in D.C., we had 100 Reasons to Celebrate.

After more than 20 years as a member and several years serving on the national board, I have learned that courage grows through encouragement and service. Every officer, branch leader, member and even administrative assistant we have had over the years, contributes to the strength of our League. By communicating, connecting, and cooperating with compassion, we can continue building an even stronger future for our League.
