Judge’s Statement

As the juror for the 49th Biennial art competition, Lee Ann Conlan, said,  “It has been an honor and a privilege to view the large body of beautiful artwork and a challenge to select just a few pieces for the exhibition.” Conlin considered how successfully each of the works of art addresses the subject “We are what we create.” From the submitted art work, she sought to create an exhibition that would showcase a diversity of mediums and styles. This is a reflection of the diverse membership of the NLAPW, and their different backgrounds and experiences of these women from all over the country. The artwork was judged on the visual presentation alone as artists’ statements did not accompany the work. Conlin was pleased with this method because the artist communicated through the visual art alone.

She looked in depth at the subject matter, the medium chosen, the execution and the risks taken. The questions she asked herself were: “Did I pause and zoom in? Did I want to spend more time with the piece? Did I want to meet this artist?” If her answers were “yes”, “yes” and “yes,” their work was selected to hang in the gallery.

She congratulates the artists whose work was admitted to the show and encourages all NLAPW members to continue to believe in their work and to keep creating. She thanks you for giving her the opportunity to see your art!
