Change of Course
The giraffe no longer arouses my imagination.
How amazed I am to replace
the exotic and the passion.
I’m sure the whale still sings if I would listen.
I give dolphins their due respect,
grant elephants their nobility
but do not crave them
in their oceans or tropics.
I have known these marvels
and the wonder of your wanting me,
but I leave all behind, with a thank-you,
and take the single-file narrow road.
Even you no longer stir my soul.
I’m sure you still speak in rhymes,
but I no longer need intervention
of another species,
or twist in desire for my own.
